Ocean Mural

So, its day 5 and we decided to go big…!! The theme is oceans and of course for such a large water mass filled with so much splendor we must create something equally as splendid, so what better way than to create a mural… The initial part of the project was messy and the girls danced in paint, used sponges had paint in hair, but I have to tell you there is something magical about process art the more the children experiment try new techniques and add colours the more perfectly imperfect it becomes… If you don’t believe me just look at the masterpiece below…

Once the painting was finished I left the background out and the girls could go to the mural and add the fish to the ocean as they wanted too… Cianna was so specific as to what needed to be in the Ocean and insisted there was a penguin and an octopus and a fish… So, Maya did the octopus and Leah added the penguin and the fish. it became a whole family project… The more that gets added to the mural the more alive the ocean became… It was such a lovely activity to keep the girls busy well I quickly fixed dinner or ran the bath, we even had to read Tiddler by Julia Donaldson as a bed story so we could have more ideas of what fish to draw…

What you will need:

  • Large sheet of paper
  • Ocean colour paint (we used dala liquid tempera: light blue, dark blue, green, purple, yellow)
  • Sponges to paint with
  • Paintbrushes
  • Bowls for paint
  • Musking tape to secure paper
  • Pastels
  • Glitter paint

How to Create an Ocean Mural:

  • Secure the paper onto the floor using masking tape
  • Put paint in the bowls with paint brushes and sponges
  • Alllow them to paint where on the paper they feel like and with what colours…the girls got excited and also painted with their hands and feet too and the added to the effect…
  • When it was dry I let the girls paint with glitter to give it more dimension.
  • Once completely dry I gave them the pastels and they could add the sea creatures where ever they wanted too…

And there its is under the sea, under the sea, darling its better down where its wetter take it from me ha ha ha ha ha, the little mermaid was stuck in my head the whole time ha ha ha… This challenge was a real splash…! See you tomorrow for day 6…

love
